Host Handbook

Everything you need to host an Open Farms event

Security

Alongside sharing your story and welcoming people into the world of farming, it’s important to take a few precautions to keep you, your family and farm safe.

Address information. During your event registration process, we’ll ask for your farm address. This will not be posted publicly and only shared with your registered visitors.

Farm-house security. We do not recommend opening up your personal home to visitors and encourage locking doors and windows during the event.

Farm Security:

  • Store expensive equipment and tools in locked workshops.
  • Recruit volunteers for more eyes and ears on-the-ground.
  • Remove any keys from vehicles and doors.
  • Take an inventory of equipment and tools you are displaying to the public.
  • If you see anyone acting suspicious, photograph or record their details and vehicle registration/make/model/colour.
  • The NZ Police have put together a rural security checklist which might be helpful.
